About the National Statistics Bureau
The National Statistics Bureau (NSB) is the central statistical authority and premier data custodian for the Royal Government of Bhutan. Originally established in 1971 as a small statistical cell to support national policy formulation, the bureau evolved into the Central Statistical Organization (CSO) before gaining full autonomy as the NSB in 2003. Operating under an official Executive Order, the NSB is responsible for collecting, validating, analyzing, and distributing high-quality data. It acts as the parent organization for statistical officers working across various government ministries, departments, and Dzongkhags (districts) nationwide.
As Bhutan advances into a modern, digital era, the NSB serves as a cornerstone for evidence-based decision-making and sustainable socioeconomic development. The bureau executes critical national data operations, including the Population and Housing Census, the Bhutan Living Standard Survey, and key economic indicators like Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the Consumer Price Index (CPI). By modernizing its systems with interactive data portals and mobile platforms, the NSB ensures that policy makers, researchers, businesses, and citizens have easy, transparent access to reliable data that supports national development goals and the principles of Gross National Happiness (GNH).
